Everything you should know about ovulation

The ovulation usually takes place halfway through the cycle, approx. between 12 and 16 days from the first day of menstruation.  The ovulation comprises the release of the egg cell from the Graafian follicle maturing in the ovary.  The egg cell travels through the Fallopian tube to reach the uterus and get impregnated there.

It might seem surprising but the number of egg cells is pre-determined, that is each woman is born with the pre-determined no. of egg cells, between 700k and 2 million.  Unfortunately, most of those cells degenerate and a uterus of a mature woman has no more than approx. 40k of of egg cells. Usually, the female ovulation is practically symptom-free.  Apart from the changed consistency and colour of the mucosa or changed body temperature, they have no symptoms.   Painful ovulations or pains surrounding ovulations are caused by significant stretching of the uterus walls.  Sometimes, women may also observe staining during the ovulation period. In a woman’s cycle, usually one ovulation takes place. However, ovulation may not take place at all or there might be two ovulations during a single cycle.  It is possible that two Graafian follicles mature simultaneously in one or two ovaries.  It also sometimes happens that the follicles mature within a short period of time after each other or completely spontaneously, e.g. during intercourse.  If the ovulation does not take place, this means that the so-called luteinization of the Graafian follicle which has not burst took place, so the egg cell penetrated outside.  There are various reasons for the non-occurrence of ovulation. Interestingly, we might not even now about it as the lack of ovulation does not necessarily correspond to the lack menstruation which might occur on time or might be slightly irregular.  There are various reasons for the non-occurrence of ovulation and treatment depends on the diagnosis.  However, one should remember that cycles without ovulation also occur in healthy women.  If this happens once or twice a year, there is no need to worry.
